2026–27 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey starts with the familiar Young Guns chase and adds some unusually interesting design work around it. Stencils builds a player's portrait entirely from foil. Youthful Spirits pairs hockey stars with original paintings by Presten Warren. Together, they give this season's first flagship installment plenty to look at while the rookie checklist takes shape. Young Guns remains the starting point

Series 1 contains 250 base-set cards: 198 veterans, 49 Young Guns subjects and three checklist cards. The illustrated Frondell card gives an early look at the new Young Guns treatment: a large skating photograph, slanted lettering across the lower section and a red Outburst field around the player. The base parallel ladder includes Deluxe /250, UD Exclusives /100, Outburst Red /25, High Gloss /10 and Outburst Gold 1/1. Clear Cut and Outburst Silver also return. Stencils is the new insert to examine first

The Eichel preview is refreshingly direct. His face, name and the small logo do all the work, with no rink photograph or decorative frame competing for attention. The blank areas within the portrait become part of the image. That is a meaningful change in how a flagship insert is built, and the foil-only construction makes the physical finish central to the card.

The numbered Stencils colors run Red /399, Yellow /199, Green /99, Blue /50 and Purple /25. Those colors belong to the Stencils family; a red Stencils card and an Outburst Red base card carry different print runs and different designs. Hobby product breakdown

Youthful Spirits brings original paintings into the release

Youthful Spirits uses 12 paintings created specifically for the set by Presten Warren, an Aboriginal artist and storyteller. Each player's backdrop incorporates his team's colors. The Caufield example uses Montreal's colors throughout the painted field, integrating the uniform into the composition. The curving patterns also contrast with the player's sharply defined photograph. It feels like an art collaboration conceived as a complete card, with the background contributing more than a color match.

Electric Soul goes in another direction, using a single-color player image against a team-color background. Bootleg returns with 18 players and 18 designs, combining foil, a soft-touch surface and gloss coating. The attraction here is variety in both appearance and construction. Canvas, movie posters and a face-off photograph

Series 1 begins this season's UD Canvas run with cards C-1 through C-120. Hobby averages four Canvas or Canvas Young Guns cards in total; the separate Canvas rookie average is six per case. Upper Deck's Canvas details

UD Portraits adopts a movie-poster look on foilboard. The Hellebuyck preview leans into it with a dramatic close-up, restrained lettering near the top and a large gold title at the bottom. It is one of the clearest visual changes among the returning inserts. Upper Deck's Portraits preview

Two new photographic sets keep the focus on specific hockey moments. Debut Dates combines an image from a player's first NHL game with its date and opponent. Hobby versus the October retail formats

Hobby's central averages are six Young Guns, four Canvas cards, four Stencils, one Outburst Silver and one Blue Dazzlers. Another slot can be a numbered card, a nonnumbered short print or a printing plate. Manufacturer box breakdown, page 10

Retail has a useful change this year: Clear Cut base parallels extend to Tins and Gravity Feed. The Tin also includes an exclusive Dazzlers bonus pack and averages three Young Guns. Young Guns will determine the rookie collecting story, but Stencils and Youthful Spirits already make a persuasive visual case for this release. The Eichel foil portrait and Caufield painting represent two very different treatments, each with a clear identity. Add the movie-poster Portraits and the face-off photography, and Series 1 looks capable of holding attention well beyond its rookie stack.
