Marie-Philip Poulin’s PWHL Powerhouses PS-3 is a terrific place to start with 2026 Upper Deck National Hockey Card Day. Her burgundy-and-blue Montreal Victoire uniform stands out against a largely monochrome rink, while slanting blue borders give the photograph a crisp frame. The captain’s C, No. 29 and Victoire crest all remain prominent. It is a hockey card with a clear subject and a design that knows where to put your attention.

The 2026 event took place on April 11, with free packs at participating hobby shops. Its cards bring NHL rookies, established stars and retired greats together with mascots and the event’s first PWHL insert set. The promotion has passed; the cards remain a particularly colorful record of that year’s gathering.

Poulin gives the PWHL cards their own spotlight

The official checklist includes 10 PWHL Powerhouses. Poulin is joined by Sarah Fillier, Taylor Heise, Renata Fast and other players across the six teams represented. That gives the event a dedicated women’s hockey component alongside its NHL lineup, with a separate PS numbering sequence.

Poulin’s preview gets a lot out of a straightforward action photograph. Her bent knees and stick running across the lower image create movement; the angular border follows that energy without covering her face or the team crest. The white name at the top and the large PWHL title at the bottom are easy to read. Burgundy carries the player, blue carries the frame, and the gray rink keeps the two from competing with a busy background.

For a Montreal collection, this creates a pleasing counterpart to the Canadiens cards elsewhere in the release. The city connects the subjects, while the Victoire colors and PWHL treatment give Poulin’s card its own identity. It belongs in the conversation for its photograph and presentation as well as its place in the event’s expanded hockey coverage.

Demidov and Schaefer take different visual routes

Ivan Demidov NHCD-1 opens the Prominent Rookies group. His bright red Canadiens sweater sits inside an equally lively turquoise frame, with gold and gray geometric accents around the edges. The photograph keeps the bench visible behind him, and the pale fade near the bottom lets the large rookie title sit across the skating image. This is an energetic design, particularly for a player whose uniform already supplies such a strong color.

The main NHL sequence contains 10 Prominent Rookies, 10 Hockey Superstars and 10 Legends on Ice. Demidov and Matthew Schaefer lead the rookies; Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby appear among the stars, with Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux in the Legends group. The numbered progression makes those three generations easy to follow without turning the event set into a sprawling checklist.

Schaefer V-9 shows how different the separate UD Victory Black Rookies treatment feels. His Islanders blue and orange cut sharply through the dark, distressed background. A broad silver ROOKIES title sweeps across the lower portion, with the red Victory logo tucked into its edge. The image is tighter and the surrounding color much darker than Demidov’s Prominent Rookies card; the uniform becomes the brightest thing in the composition.

Victory Black has 10 entries numbered V-9 through V-18. It also reaches beyond the main rookie group to players including Sam Dickinson and Ben Kindel. That makes the insert checklist useful even if you already have the 10 Prominent Rookies: it adds different subjects as well as a different design.

Tusky understands the assignment

Tusky’s M-1 Mascot Mannerisms card is gloriously committed to the bit. Both arms are raised, the long trunk fills the center and icy blue fur practically bursts out of the black Utah jersey. Blue-and-black rays echo the mascot’s colors, while a curved gray panel gives the name and set title somewhere quiet to sit. There is very little chance of mistaking this for another serious skating portrait.

The 10-card mascot group also includes SJ Sharkie and Youppi!, so it can stand as a distinct part of the event collection. Tusky’s appeal is especially visual: the silhouette, tusks and exaggerated pose remain clear even before reading the name. With that much enthusiasm squeezed into one card, the raised arms feel entirely appropriate.

The extra Demidov card had a different route

The event’s Rookie Moments NHCD-31 is a separate Demidov card from NHCD-1. Upper Deck’s 2026 promotion offered the bonus with a $10 purchase of Upper Deck product at participating retailers, while supplies lasted. The free pack and the purchase-linked bonus were therefore two parts of the event. Collectors sorting the 2026 cards should keep those two Demidov numbers distinct.

Upper Deck also offered nine-card sheets at selected Canadian retailers and advertised possible Victory, autograph and mascot inserts in packs. The common pack checklist crossed regions, giving the promotion a shared set for collectors to trade toward. Its lasting attraction is visible in the cards themselves: Poulin’s focused action shot, Demidov’s bright rookie frame, Schaefer’s darker Victory treatment and one mammoth who looks delighted to have made the checklist.
