2026–27 O-Pee-Chee Hockey: A Matching Card for You and the Player

A new two-card pairing gives O-Pee-Chee an unusually personal chase. The larger release brings its own attractions: a deep base set, Retro variations and three very different approaches to hockey-card design.

We update this release guide as verified product details develop.

Pull a 2 of a Kind card in 2026–27 O-Pee-Chee Hockey, and its matching copy goes to the NHL player pictured on it. That is a lovely idea for a hockey card: the two owners become part of the card’s story.

O-Pee-Chee also has plenty happening around that new insert. Its manufacturer sell sheet outlines a 600-card base set, Retro variations and a Hobby format built for a substantial stack of hockey cards. The new pairing supplies the headline; the set’s illustrated borders, playing cards and rookie designs give the rest of the box its character.

How 2 of a Kind works

Upper Deck’s new annual program starts with 100 players. Each receives the 1/2 copy; the 2/2 goes into packs. The cards have metallic foilboard fronts and rose-gold backs, and collectors can pull them directly from Hobby and retail products, without a redemption.

The player’s companion copy is the attraction for me. A low serial number already makes a card memorable; knowing who receives its partner gives this particular pairing a personal detail to enjoy.

Upper Deck also plans a submission opportunity for a chance to meet the matching player, with details and limitations to follow. Owning the card does not itself promise a meeting.

The set around the new chase

O-Pee-Chee’s high series covers 100 of the 600 base cards, combining League Leaders, Award Winners, Postseason Highlights and Marquee Rookies. Hobby boxes contain 18 packs of ten cards. The sell sheet gives an average of one high-series card and one Retro variation per pack.

That puts two distinct set-building threads into an ordinary pack: the main design and its Retro counterpart. Following a player through those two treatments should be part of the fun here. The broad checklist also gives team collectors more room than a product built around a small selection of stars.

The Hobby hot boxes take the Retro idea much further: every card inside is a Retro Gold parallel numbered to ten. A normal box and one of those all-gold boxes would be dramatically different opening experiences. Gold is especially well suited to a set that makes the border part of its identity.

The main-set Purple Border is Hobby-exclusive and numbered to 49. Separate high-series foil parallels reach down to Gold 1/1, while Retro Black Border cards are numbered to 100. These are different branches of the product; the individual finish and design still matter alongside the number. Upper Deck product breakdown

Three inserts with three different personalities

The 3-D Marquee Rookie preview puts Carter Yakemchuk in front of an almost tunnel-like rainbow. His white Ottawa jersey breaks across the dark, saturated background, and the large bilingual rookie lettering makes the insert feel exuberantly old-fashioned. Lenticular stock gives that layered composition another reason to exist beyond a different border color.

O-Pee-Chee Premier takes a more restrained route. Lane Hutson’s preview keeps the photograph prominent, with a burgundy plaque below it and a fine diamond pattern across the foilboard. The repeated diagonals frame his skating pose without swallowing it. Of the three, it is the clearest choice for someone who wants the hockey photograph to do most of the work.

Then there is Opichi, whose Macklin Celebrini preview trades foil geometry for a dense ornamental frame. Birds occupy the upper corners; warm pink, green and gold patterning surrounds the Sharks uniform. The teal jersey holds its own against all that decoration. I like the way it makes a modern action photograph feel at home inside an illustrated border.

The Opichi set has 20 cards. Premier has Hobby-exclusive Foil Ring /299, Diamond Rainbow Foilboard /75 and Sparkler /25 parallels. The Hobby breakdown lists 3-D Marquee Rookies at 1:1,728 packs, compared with 1:6 for regular Premier cards. Those ratios belong to the specified Hobby configuration. Manufacturer insert details

Playing cards and a rookie puzzle

The Hobby-exclusive O-Pee-Chee Playing Cards use a player for each suit and rank, giving the product another collecting project with a familiar structure. The sell sheet lists four per Hobby box on average. It is an appealing fit for O-Pee-Chee: the card’s identity can come from its place in a deck as much as from a rare finish.

The Top Rookie Puzzle Bounty uses nine pieces, with completion eligible for up to three award cards featuring a top rookie. Upper Deck directs collectors to Upper Deck Bounty on or after release for the program details. The connected puzzle is a different kind of chase from finding a single scarce parallel, and the actual image will matter to how enjoyable that nine-card project becomes.

When 2026–27 O-Pee-Chee arrives

Upper Deck targets around the 2027 NHL All-Star Weekend. The NHL event runs February 5–6 at UBS Arena; O-Pee-Chee’s exact release day remains unannounced.

My early interest is split between the Opichi border and the player-held half of 2 of a Kind. The Celebrini preview makes Opichi’s appeal immediately visible. For 2 of a Kind, the first player checklist will answer the more personal question: who could be holding the partner to your card?
